FOOD truck operators are not allowed to conduct business in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) public parking lots.

DBKL’s corporate communications unit said that no permission has been given to food truck operators to use the parking lots.

“DBKL has not given any permission to any food truck operator to conduct business in public parking lots,” DBKL told The Vibes.

Food truck operators had urged DBKL to listen to their grouses, among them to provide suitable parking lots to operate their business and earn a living.

Kuala Lumpur Food Truck Entrepreneur Association (KLFTEA) president Muhammad Azlan Abas said DBKL must have a dialogue session with the operators to address any shortcomings they have in their operations.

He said previously DBKL had allocated 200 parking spaces in the city centre for the food truck operators to do business – the parking lots were marked in red paint and signboards erected to indicate their locations.

“But there were incidents when the public parked their vehicles in the spots which were meant for food trucks. Left with no choice, the food truck operators had to park in other spots which were meant for the public,” Azlan said.

DBKL said that, to date, there are 199 food truck operators who are actively operating in Kuala Lumpur – an increase compared to last year.

“There are two designated areas where these food truck operators are located, namely hotspot areas and pit stop areas.

“For hotspot areas, the number of food trucks in each location is over 10 and there is an organiser who manages each location.”

DBKL has approved six static hotspot locations where food trucks are allowed to operate.

The areas are Tapak @ Jalan Ampang, Tapak @ Cheras Stadium, LAPARK @ Jalan Conlay, Sembang @ Matic, Sembang @ Bukit Jalil dan MYBOX @ Bukit Jalil.

DBKL has also allocated designated car park lots called pit stops for food trucks to operate at.

“As for the pit stop area, the number of food trucks allowed at the given location is no more than 10 vehicles.”

The city council said, to date, there are 184 pit stop locations around Kuala Lumpur, such as at Bukit Bintang, Setiawangsa and other areas.

DBKL also said that they are constantly monitoring food truck operations in KL.

“DBKL constantly monitors and implements enforcement actions on food truck operators who are found to be conducting business without permission and operating in unauthorized areas.” – May 11, 2024.
