THE landslide at the foot of Mount Kinabalu in Ranau, which occurred earlier today, was far from any residential area and village, the Fire and Rescue Department reported.
Ranau Fire and Rescue chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said they received a report from Sabah Parks about the incident around 1.30pm.
“The landslide happened at the foot of Mount Kinabalu around 1.20am, causing mud flow at 5am,” he said in a statement in Ranau.
Ridwan said a five-man team has been deployed to the site near Mesilou, Kundasang in the Ranau district.
Several media outlets in Sabah have reported that the landslide was triggered by heavy rain over the past two days on the mountain.
Sabah Parks director Maklarin Lakim said no injuries have been reported as the incident occurred far from the summit trail.
However, local authorities have raised concern that debris from the landslide could flow into the Liwagu River, where the district’s water intake and treatment plant are located.-- The Vibes, June 24, 2024
