AN AEON Bank customer was left stunned after more than RM1 billion appeared in his account in a transaction the bank later confirmed was a mistake.

Wan Mohd Fairuz, who shared the incident on Threads under the handle @wmfmza, said RM1,000,315,879 was credited to his account on Oct 14 at about 10.36 am.

A screenshot he posted showed the transaction labelled “Bank adjustment”, categorised under “Rewards – Promotion/Campaign”, with the description “Cash Reward – Merdeka / Malaysia Day 2026 Campaign (Cycle 6)”.

Fairuz said he had not taken part in any promotion or made any purchase that could explain the unexpected credit.

In the comments, he said he checked his banking app at about 11 am and contacted the bank after noticing the transaction.

The post drew a flurry of reactions, with users joking about the prospect of becoming a billionaire overnight.

Some speculated that the amount had been transferred by mistake, while others took the opportunity to ask Fairuz for a loan.

The official AEON Retail Malaysia account also joined the conversation, adding to the light-hearted exchange.

Other users joked that the bank statement would come in handy when dealing with people who looked down on them.

In a follow-up post, Fairuz confirmed that the matter had been resolved and the bank had removed the erroneous amount from his account.

He said the bank had also offered him a reward for alerting it to the mistake, although he had yet to find out what it would be.

Fairuz said he was waiting for an email from the bank with further details, adding that he hoped the gesture would be worthwhile.

AEON Bank’s own account of the incident was not included in his posts. – October 15, 2026
