KUALA LUMPUR – The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has asked four states to activate their state and district disaster management committees, and heighten their level of preparedness for possible disasters, especially in high-risk areas.

In a statement today, Nadma said this is following heavy and continuous rain forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

The committees were also asked to ensure temporary relief centres have sufficient essentials and crime scene control posts are equipped with functional operational assets.

“Nadma, through the National Disaster Command Centre (NDCC) and in collaboration with various technical agencies, will be constantly monitoring the technical information parametres,” the statement read.

It said NDCC was always ready to receive information on disasters, management and operational assistance via 03-8064-2400 (telephone), 03-8064-2429 (fax) or [email protected] (email).

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia also issued a Category Two strong wind and rough sea warning for East Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan waters until January 31.

In a Facebook post, the department said both conditions were dangerous for all shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services.

“An increase in sea levels is also expected to occur in the same areas until January 31 that poses a risk of seawater flooding in coastal areas,” the statement read further. – Bernama, January 26, 2023
