A COUPLE have been detained for allegedly attempting to take nearly RM3 million in undeclared cash into Singapore through the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex yesterday.

Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) deputy director-general (Operations) Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said the man and woman, aged 41 and 42, were detained at 11.40am in the vehicle inspection area for traffic heading into Singapore.

He said the couple, both businesspeople, were travelling in a locally registered white Toyota Alphard multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

“During an inspection by three AKPS officers, the driver behaved suspiciously when questioned and was instructed to open the storage compartments and passenger seating areas for checks.

“The inspection uncovered RM1,971,697 in cash and S$300,000, bringing the total value of the cash seized to RM2.92 million,” he said at a press conference at the AKPS office at the complex today.

The cash was neatly packed in three boxes, a paper bag and a black backpack.

Mohd Nasaruddin said the couple claimed they were travelling to Singapore for a holiday, but authorities were still investigating why they were carrying such a large amount of cash.

Both were detained, while the cash and vehicle were seized to assist investigations under Regulation 55(1)(b) of the Customs Regulations 2019.

He said anyone bringing more than US$10,000 in cash into or out of the country was required to make a declaration.

AKPS, he added, was committed to tightening controls at the country’s entry points to curb violations that could threaten national interests or cause losses to government revenue. - October 28, 2026
