A LAS VEGAS jury on Aug 31 found former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of murder in the 1996 killing of legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, bringing a decades-long investigation into one of rap music’s most enduring mysteries to a close.
Davis, 63, was convicted in Nevada’s Clark County of a single count of murder using a deadly weapon. He had pleaded not guilty.
Reuters reported that prosecutors accused Davis of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur, 25, one of the most commercially successful and influential artists in hip-hop, in retaliation for the beating of Davis’ nephew at a Las Vegas casino.
The trial began on Aug 17, with prosecutors relying heavily on Davis’ own public statements, a memoir and recordings of secret conversations with investigators.
Police had long suspected Davis of involvement but lacked sufficient evidence to charge him until he began publicly discussing the killing in media appearances and in his memoir. Prosecutors argued that his statements, together with recorded conversations, established his role in the murder.
Davis’ lawyer maintained that his client’s accounts amounted to mere bravado and could not be independently corroborated by other evidence.
During the trial, prosecutors played hours of recorded conversations in which Davis described his anger after Shakur and members of his entourage beat up his nephew on Sept 7, 1996.
Davis said he and three other men, including his nephew, then set out in a white Cadillac to find Shakur and Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight.
According to Davis’ account, he passed a firearm to the back seat after the group located Knight and Shakur in their vehicle. One of the two men in the back then opened fire.
Prosecutors have not identified the alleged gunman. The three other men who were in the Cadillac have since died.
Under Nevada law, Davis can be convicted of murder even though prosecutors do not allege that he personally pulled the trigger.
Davis was a leader of the Southside Compton Crips, a Los Angeles-area street gang that was involved in a feud with the rival Mob Piru, which was associated with Shakur and his record label, Death Row Records.
Shakur was shot in a drive-by attack in Las Vegas on Sept 7, 1996, and died six days later at the age of 25.
His killing became a defining moment in hip-hop history, deepening concerns over violence surrounding the genre during the height of the “gangsta” rap era and the bitter rivalry between artists associated with the US West and East Coasts.
The conviction closes a case that has remained at the centre of speculation and conspiracy theories for almost 30 years, while cementing Davis’ role in the official account of the murder of one of hip-hop’s most enduring cultural figures. - September 1, 2026
