ASEAN must guard against perception of geopolitical agenda

ASEAN must use its growing influence on the international stage cautiously and ensure its collective voice is not perceived as advancing any particular geopolitical agenda, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said.

He said ASEAN’s large population and economic strength had given the regional bloc greater weight internationally, with its positions often attracting support from the international community.

“Usually, when ASEAN speaks, it receives support from the international community, but we need to be careful because there are also matters that we need to handle cautiously,” he said.

Mohamad said ASEAN’s voice must remain grounded in principles, including defending human rights and upholding international law.

“This is important to ensure that ASEAN continues to be trusted and heard by the international community,” he said at a press conference after delivering Malaysia’s national statement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

He said this was particularly important as ASEAN faced an increasingly uncertain geopolitical and geo-economic environment in which the bloc could play a larger role internationally.

Meanwhile, Malaysia has been invited to become co-chair of the Hague Group, a coalition established to strengthen adherence to international law, including efforts relating to the Palestinian issue.

Mohamad said the invitation reflected recognition of Malaysia’s position on violations of international law and human rights on international platforms.

“Many countries want us to become a co-chair, including South Africa, because of Malaysia’s very strong voice on every international platform or stage, including the voice of the Prime Minister, who has consistently spoken about violations of international law and international human rights,” he said.

However, he said the proposed appointment still required Cabinet approval and consideration by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Hague Group was established to strengthen compliance with international law, including efforts to address the Palestinian issue.

Mohamad said Malaysia’s growing role reflected its continued advocacy of international law and human rights at international forums. - September 28, 2026
