THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has agreed to further extend the deadline for the declaration of assets by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s two sons.

According to reports in The Star, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said lawyers representing Mirzan Mahathir and Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir had requested an extension of the deadline for them to declare assets.

“We set the initial date for them to declare the assets, and later, we agreed to extend it further the deadline for them, both of them to do so,” he said at an event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Yesterday, Azam said neither Mirzan nor Mokhzani had declared their assets to the anti-graft body though their deadlines were set for May 25 and May 29, respectively.

In January, the two were given notices to declare their assets within 30 days by February, but the MACC has since granted them multiple extensions.

The latest deadline extension was granted on April 26, when Mokhzani and Mirzan were given another 30-day extension.

Mirzan and Mokhzani were called up by MACC for questioning last January although it is not clear what the investigation is about.

MACC had also directed Mokhzani and his elder brother Mirzan to declare the assets they accumulated since 1981, the year Dr Mahathir first became prime minister. – May 29, 2024
