TWO men from Kedah who were working for a subcontractor at the Bakun Dam site in Belaga district in central Sarawak have been found drowned following a tragic outing near rapids.

The bodies of A. Rhuban, 30, and P. Balavishnu, 34, have been recovered from Sungai Menjawah deep in the dam reservoir, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department confirmed today.

The two were among a group of five men who had ventured to the Sungai Menjawah rapids late on Sunday afternoon for a casual outing.

“The longboat they were using capsized in the middle of the river after being overwhelmed by turbulent currents,” the department said.

Three managed to survive and were rescued by villagers shortly after the incident.

However, Rhuban and Balavishnu were swept away by the swift currents.

Bomba Belaga conducted a search and rescue mission with the help of local villagers.

The body of Rhuban was discovered this morning in the river, while the body of Balavishnu was found late yesterday.

The case have been handed over to police while the bodies have been taken to the Belaga Hospital. – June 19, 2024.
